Culture

Twinning, Ballydehob - Cleden Cap Sizun

Visit to Cap Sizun
Ballydehob is involved in a twinning project with Cleden Cap Sizun in Brittany. The charter was signed on 19th September 1999. The twinning allows for a variety of social and cultural exchange opportunities to include: visits to local places of interest; hospitality; music; dance; song and cuisine.
Both young and old can benefit greatly from the linguistic experience; improving their fluency in either language. This project also creates the excellent opportunity for the schools local to both, Ballydehob and Cleden Cap Sizun, to share in their projects and experiences with their counter partners.

The exchange usually consists of a party of about 45 people living in the local community which is open to all, with a visit taking place from each village on alternate years. The journey takes about 18 hours via the ferry, and the trip lasts about a week. Each visitor is usually hosted within a family home close by to the village, with transport provided either by the family or coach and brought to the organised social events and activities. Host families are often to be found enjoying these occasions too, allowing for the further development of friendships.

Cap Sizun

Over the past years the coach trips organised from here in Ballydehob have taken our visitors to places such as: Schull, the Mizen and Barleycove Beach; lunch at the picturesque setting of Glebe Gardens in Baltimore; Bantry market; the beautiful Garnish Island off the coast of Glengarif; Sherkin Island; Kinsale; and Killarney - a place to which they love to return every year. Across the water in Brittany, our hosts have introduced us to some wonderful places. Over the years these have included: a boat trip on the River Odet to Benodet - a beautiful seaside resort; a visit to Ocean Apolis, and aquatic centre in Brest; the Glenans Islands; Isle de Sein; and the historic town of Quimper, with its' cobbled streets and beautiful castle.

The people of Cledan Cap Sizun will be joining us for the week of Saturday 17th through to Sat 24th of April this year, 2010, which enables them to take in the Traditional Festival here in Ballydehob. This visit also signifies our twinning with them for ten years now. If you would like to get involved with this project you are very welcome and you can phone either Michael Cleary on 028 37605 or Terri O'Mahony on 028 37621 to find out more. The next journey planned from Ballydehob to Cledan Cap Sizun will take place in the summer of 2011. All offers of support with things such as fundraising and hosting families are greatly appreciated. We aim to continue to make this rich and rewarding project affordable and accessible to all who wish to join us.
